Which of the following polysaccharides is a polymer of fructose?

  1. A

    Cellulose

  2. B

    Glycogen

  3. C

    Inulin

  4. D

    Starch

Show the answer
The answer is C.

Inulin is a polymer of fructose. Cellulose, starch and glycogen are all homopolymers of glucose.

  • A.

Cellulose is a homopolymer of glucose.

  • B.

Glycogen, the animal storage polysaccharide, is a polymer of glucose.

  • D.

Starch, the plant storage polysaccharide, is a polymer of glucose.

A figure shows the structure of a compound: a five-carbon ribose sugar ring, with the nitrogen base adenine attached to its first carbon and a phosphate group esterified to the hydroxyl group of its fifth carbon. If the phosphate group is removed, what compound is left?

  1. A

    Adenylic acid, a nucleotide

  2. B

    Adenosine, a nucleoside

  3. C

    Adenine, a purine base

  4. D

    Ribose, a pentose sugar

Show the answer
The answer is B.

A nitrogen base attached to a sugar is a nucleoside, such as adenosine. When a phosphate is also esterified to the sugar it becomes a nucleotide, such as adenylic acid. Removing the phosphate from adenylic acid leaves adenosine.

  • A.

Adenylic acid is the compound in the figure: base, sugar and phosphate together form a nucleotide. Removing the phosphate leaves a nucleoside.

  • C.

Adenine alone is left only if the sugar is removed as well. With the sugar still attached, the compound is a nucleoside.

  • D.

Ribose alone is left only if both the base and the phosphate are removed.
