Sample 1Medium

A figure shows the urinogenital system of a male frog in ventral view. A is a pair of elongated, dark red organs, one on each side of the vertebral column. B is a pair of yellowish, ovoid organs, each attached to the upper part of an A by a double fold of peritoneum. A duct from each A runs back to D, a common chamber into which the gut also opens. Which statement about the figure is correct?

  1. A

B are the fat bodies, which store food for hibernation

  2. B

A are the testes and B are the kidneys

  3. C

The duct from A carries only urine, and sperms leave by a separate duct

  4. D

B are the testes; their 10–12 vasa efferentia enter A and open into Bidder's canal

Show the answer
The answer is D.

In the male frog the yellowish ovoid testes (B) are attached to the upper part of the kidneys (A) by the mesorchium. Ten to twelve vasa efferentia enter the kidneys and open into Bidder's canal, which joins the urinogenital duct leading to the cloaca (D).

  • A.

The yellowish ovoid organs held to the kidneys by a fold of peritoneum, the mesorchium, are the testes.

  • B.

The elongated dark red organs beside the vertebral column are the kidneys. The yellowish ovoid organs attached to them are the testes.

  • C.

In the male frog the duct from the kidney is a urinogenital duct. It carries both urine and sperms to the cloaca.
