Sample questions

Sample 1Medium

A test scheme shows an amine X, molecular formula C2H7N, shaken with benzenesulphonyl chloride. The product is a solid that does not dissolve in aqueous potassium hydroxide. What is X?

  1. A

    Methanamine, CH3NH2

  2. B

    N-Methylmethanamine, (CH3)2NH

  3. C

    Ethanamine, CH3CH2NH2

  4. D

    N,N-Dimethylmethanamine, (CH3)3N

Show the answer
The answer is B.

In the Hinsberg test, a secondary amine gives an N,N-disubstituted sulphonamide with no hydrogen on nitrogen, so it is not acidic and does not dissolve in alkali. The secondary amine with formula C2H7N is N-methylmethanamine.

  • A.

Methanamine is CH5N, not C2H7N, and as a primary amine its product would dissolve in alkali.

  • C.

A primary amine gives a sulphonamide with an acidic N–H, which dissolves in alkali.

  • D.

A tertiary amine has no N–H and does not react with benzenesulphonyl chloride; its formula is also C3H9N.
