What is the IUPAC name of CH3–CH(CH3)–CH2–CH(OH)–CH3?

  1. A

    2-methylpentan-4-ol

  2. B

    1,3-dimethylbutan-1-ol

  3. C

    4-methylpentan-2-ol

  4. D

    4-methylpentan-1-ol

Show the answer
The answer is C.

The longest chain containing the carbon bearing OH has five carbons. Numbering from the end nearer the OH group puts OH on C-2 and the methyl on C-4, giving 4-methylpentan-2-ol.

  • A.

The chain is numbered from the wrong end; the OH group must get the lowest locant.

  • B.

This does not use the longest chain; a methyl at C-1 extends the chain to five carbons.

  • D.

This places OH on a terminal carbon, which is a different compound.
